Little Diary of Personal Things and Aubergine Boots with You Are My High – Demon vs Hearthbreaker – Who wins?

http://vimeo.com/36280169

I have held this song in my heart with inescapable tenderness. I first heard it at Les-Bains-Douches in Paris when I was very much in love with someone that I haven’t seen in ages. It’s one of those songs that whisks you right out from under yourself. I wore aubergine, stacked heel, knee-high boots that night. They kicked away other people’s cigarettes and carefully avoided the shiny toed-loafers of the blue-blazered bankers and blonde girls around me. I had made a half-hearted attempt to be “blonde-enough” (whatever that meant then, whatever it means now, is up for grabs) and frosted the tips of my hair…at home. Much to the horror of…well, everyone that carefully explained that frosting had not been done since the early 90′s. At best. And I danced on and on and then some. I had always wanted to be in love, dancing to a song like that, in that very place, for some reason. Purple boots included, oddly enough.
At the time, I thought that “You Are My High,” by Demon was another song entirely. That they were singing, “You are My Life,” – which turned out to be the wrong words, and it turned out to be the wrong boy, and despite these things, the music is still as magic- winding along the bends of Music Memory Lane –  as one can get.
The words and beat are intimate and soaring at the same time. What more could you ask for in this kind of song, really? A song about a moment, a heady feeling, a throw yourself into it and love it so hard moment. The video’s forthright, innocent sexiness says it all, and it is largely different from most mini-films that appeared when it was released over a decade ago. It’s Fresh. And enduring. Which makes it a classic.
While the couple’s androgeny is striking, the female is actually a well-known French Star *For Grown-Ups*.  The simplicity of and well, purity of the moment is juxtaposed by eroticism – but it’s just an earth-shaking kiss. It’s joyous, really. Here, we go, Friends. Let this be your high…and Happy 2013. May it be filled with kisses that outdo even this one.

PS: Heartbreaker Won

With Love and Irony from Hollywood and England, Music Video from Marina and The Diamonds and More

Marina and The Diamonds sing their own anthem to the American Flag in this sassy, trashy, brassy frolic through a parody of everything from HighSchool cheerleading to who comes to Hollywood and for what. It’s a grand ol’ party where you can’t tell the confetti from the popcorn and you could choke on either. It’s a fairly heavy grind for a poptastic beat.

This new direction suits her well, and the video is vivid and luscious, but I miss the emotional, “I Am Not a Robot,” crooning that she did a few years back.

This is damn catchy, though..with astute lyrics cloaked in tongue and cheekishness.

“American Greed is the American Dream”

“Hollywood Infected my Brain,

Do You Really Want to Kiss Me In the Rain?

I’m Obsessed with the Mess, That’s America,

I’ve been living in the movies, Seeking American Dreams,”

And please send me some of your Memorial Day moments – Styleyedolize should be about all of us – I’d love to hear your input – in the comment boxes and on the sidelines….
